What motivates you to write?
Writing a novel was the only thing on my bucket list. I had to do it. Now I can’t stop. Because I have a slight case of schizophrenia, I must entertain the voices. When I heard (pun intended) that some schizophrenics hear voices, I thought to myself (and others), “Doesn’t everyone?” My voices observe the acts of our chaotic society and then challenge me to write a punishment that fits the crime.
What made you chose the genre you chose?
I don’t have a choice about what I write. I’m paranoid, mean, suspicious, and want to hurt bad people. What genre do you propose?
Where do your characters come from?
My characters are bits and pieces of people I know, people I want to know, and people I never want to meet.
What’s most rewarding about writing?
I really enjoy when a reader connects with my story and bonds with my characters. Characters who are just words I created on a page.
Who is an author who inspires you and why?
I read books written by many different authors. Some of my favorites in no particular order are Allison Brennan, Greg Iles, Karin Slaughter, Lee Child, the three Lisas (Garner, Jackson, Unger), and Sandra Brown. I’ve recently added Gillian Flynn, who thinks like I do.
What do you look for in other people’s books?
Something I can believe in. Something that allows me to forget the mortgage for a few hours. Something that makes me think.
What are you writing now?
Thank you for asking. Currently, I’m working on a suspense story where a Marine sniper comes home on leave and walks into a drugstore robbery. Can you imagine angering somebody who legally hunts humans?
What kind of book would you like to be known for?
I hope when I die and the dirt hits my box, someone will say, “My goodness, she wrote books where I never knew the ending.” Kinda like life.
If you were to write in another genre, what genre excites your writer’s blood?
Sappy, tear-jerking literary fiction.
If you achieved great fame and fortune, would you continue to write?
Yes. And I would throw lavish parties for people who adored me.
What encouraging advice can you offer new writers?
With the upheaval in publishing, this is an exciting and scary time to be a writer. Write it and your heart will flourish. Write it well and they will come.
Fun interview! Meb, you make me laugh! Oh, and I love your cover, gorgeous! Can’t wait to check it out!!
Meb has been so much fun ever since we met via Twitter! I’m so glad that she agreed to this interview!
Julia,
Sorry I missed your post. The notification thingy bob failed me.
I’m glad you got a laugh from the interview. Heaven knows, we need more of them.
I really appreciate the compliment regarding my cover…my daughter owns a marketing design company and does them for me. I’ll convey your kind words.
Thanks for stopping by.
I love you ladies! My voices do, too. If I ever experience fame and fortune, you have a standing invitation to attend the lavish party. Back to writing…the voices are restless.
Keep those voices coming. They make great books and I wouldn’t want them running around lose in the world.
Write it and they will come! I love it. You inspire me!
You are one scary lady, Meb, but I still want to come to your party!
Wow Meb,
Your voices sound awesome and a little scary. Glad you get their stories out of them for people, like me, to read.
And… since I adore you, can I be on your lavish party list? 😉
Thank you leaving the flattering comments. Sandy, thank you for inviting me to your blog.
You’re so welcome! By the way, I’d like to come to that party too 🙂
Laughing and whooping:) (What else would you expect?) I loved the whole thing, Meb:) And, I have to say, I’m looking forward to attending one of your parties! 😉
Your WIP sounds really intriguing…wishing you flying fingers (careful on the visual with that;) and a plot that makes you cringe with delight!
Great interview, ladies:)
