REVIEW: A portrait of how abuse happens and how a person can help themselves!

The author, Martha Perez, begins this book by saying, “Love should never hurt.” But this is a story of abuse, and she’s done an excellent job of showing her readers the behind-the-curtain reasons why people are definitely hurt.

This book includes a number of stories of abuse, but the main one revolves around Alita Silverstone. In Alita’s story, we’re given lots of clues about why being attracted to someone doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with love. In the first part of Alita’s story, she’s looking at her boss, impressed with how handsome and rich he is. Later, while she continues to evaluate him, she’s telling herself that she doesn’t measure up. Alita’s always judging herself, finding ways to put herself down. She says, “He was like rich chocolate, and I was cheap wine.” And that’s the problem. Alita doesn’t value who she is when it comes to men like her boss. And from there, we begin to see her life unravel.

When Alita meets another man, Creed, she notices his rudeness, how he doesn’t even tip a waitress. She also hears that little voice inside, the one that throws up red flags. She ignores it and says, “. . . we trust and want to explore and fall wildly and madly in love.” Her choice in not following those red flags results in horrendous consequences for herself and others.

In the book, Enough Is Enough, we’re given a number of terrible stories of abuse, including graphic details. All the different examples are there to help us understand people who are abused and the heartlessness of abusers. Hopefully, these stories will help people to make better choices whenever they can, and to also know that they need to value themselves no matter what they’ve experienced. The author says, “Keep your power, never give it away. You count in this world.” That’s such an important message. When it’s ignored, this book tells you what can happen. Well done, Martha Perez. Five haunting stars. Highly recommended.
