Description: From somewhere among the colony of North Carolina’s Gaelic gentry, twenty-five-year-old backwoodsman Jacob Dare is determined to find a young woman to recreate the home that his father’s Dare Castle must have been. She would have to be well bred, well read, and gifted with the ability to turn the primitive into the palatial. If she Is favorable to look upon and sweetly dispositioned, that would be even better. That she could ever come to love him is irrelevant.

The Lady Catriona Kilcairn is desperately seeking to save her familial colonial home from 1776’s bloodthirsty insurrectionists, demanding she take the American Oath of Allegiance. Marriage with the backwoods oaf Jacob Dare is her only immediate option, and a most objectionable one, given that her love and loyalty belong to the Sassenach of her youth, the aristocratic Barrett Fairfax.

Yet, as the famous Scotsman Sir Walter Scott warned, “Oh, what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive!”

Review: “THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS!”
This novel is set in a time when our nation was struggling with birth and survival. So too, its main characters, Jacob Dare and Catriona Kilcairn are struggling for their place in the world. Both are very determined people who are defined by their culture and backgrounds. They each feel that they have a definite purpose. As each of them works to achieve his/her aims, their beliefs and goals rule their actions. However, neither of them seems capable of connecting with their hearts in a way that allows for true happiness.

“The pursuit of Happiness” is a phrase in the United States Declaration of Independence. Yet Jacob Dare and Catriona Kilcairn demonstrate how hard it is to find true happiness when the head, with all its limiting definitions of life, takes control.

Parris Afton Bonds is a master of historical fiction. Her settings and her characters make the reader feel like a time traveler. As I read THE CALLING OF THE CLAN, Book 2, I felt immersed in the Scottish culture and values of the period. Bonds is also a master when it comes to skillfully portraying the battle between the mind and the heart. By the end of this novel, she poignantly demonstrates the need for love that each one of us feels. Her characters mature slowly and thoughtfully. And as they allow for a deeper meaning to take hold of their actions, we celebrate the victory of their hearts over the tyranny of their minds. Five Stars on Amazon.
