Review: Great fun! SKERRY ISLAND kept me smiling and turning pages!
As a child, I loved going to the library and reading books. As an adult, I still love children stories, especially if they are full of adventure and just plain fun. SKERRY ISLAND could be described as both. It’s also very well-written with a pace that keeps moving beautifully.
The story begins with ten-year-old Leo and his seven-year-old sister, Nina. After stowing away on a ship captured by pirates, they find themselves in big trouble. Leo and Nina have a typical sister-brother relationship. Leo is often bossy and short with Nina. Nina is a delightful little girl who can challenge her brother. As the story progresses and even more problems crop up, Nina also turns out to be full of helpful surprises. Leo’s forced to look at his behavior and happily learns some valuable lessons when it comes to his younger sister.
The story has another character that I found adorable. It’s a bat named Dingbat. Unlike Leo, Dingbat is very well-mannered and respectful. Leo tends to dismiss Dingbat, but he soon finds out that help comes in all shapes and sizes. Another great lesson for Leo.
I think this is a wonderful story for kids, young and old. There’s plenty of action and escapades that includes a treasure hunt, pirates and scary creatures. But there are also great examples about why it’s important to be respectful and kind to one another. These examples are presented in a very natural way as the story unfolds. The ending of the story had me smiling and feeling like I’d just gone on a great adventure. Highly recommended for kids of all ages! Five very entertaining stars!
