Review: “Eulogy in Black and White” presents the reader with a mystery that kept me captivated and guessing until the end.

After nine, horrific murders, the police of Magnolia Bluff are still clueless, and the town’s citizens are petrified. Who’s going to be the next victim when May 23rd rolls around? How do you solve a series of seemingly unrelated homicides that just keep coming year after year and always on the same date?

Caleb Pirtle’s writing is as flawless and brilliant as ever and as clear and as wonderful as a cloudless blue, summer sky. He serves up vivid, staccato-fast descriptions and crisp conversations. Not a single word creeps in that isn’t needed. Since the story is told from a first person point of view, we get to quickly know our protagonist, Graham Huston, and how he thinks. He’s a straight-shooter, tell-it-like-it-is type of guy. He has a deep need for redemption while doing his best to remain a good and honest man when faced with tragedy.

In trying to come to grips with his own demons, he becomes involved in the demons of Magnolia Bluff. To bring resolution to all is a daunting task, but Huston isn’t a quitter. He’s willing to face his past and the town’s past too. In the end, we’re right there with him, digging deep for a resolution to murder and heartbreak.

If you like a mystery that seems impossible to solve, travel along with Huston. He’s a very non-assuming, but very clever investigator. In his quiet way, he’ll take you on a journey that’s full of surprises, full of human frailties, and finally one that leads to answers you didn’t see coming. In the end, I think you’ll love this book as much as I did.
